-Our friends at Athletico will be back in to show us techniques for proper stretching of the foot

February 13, 2010 - Tomas Pancake Predictor Fun Run w/ Etonic
-
It is that time of the month!  Come for the run, stay for the pancakes (and mimosas).  This time we have added a twist.  The predictor run!  Tell us your time you think you can do our 5k course that morning.  We will keep the official time for you as all watches will be checked at the door!  You can go as fast or slow as you want to go!  Great prizes to be won, top 2 men and women who are closest to prediction win new Etonic Shoes!

February 17, 2010 - Running Shoe Fit Clinic
-February 1, 2010 was the opening for sign up for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.  Time to start thinking about your shoes.  Let Universal Sole help you out with getting fit with the proper shoes so you can start your training out right!

February 22 - CARA Winter Half Marathon Training, Packet Pickup
-Get ready for the half marathon with CARA.  Universal Sole will be the pickup location for the half marathon training program packets.  Folks will be on hand from CARA to answer any questions you may have.

February 28 - The Original Boston 20 miler

-Join Universal Sole and The Road To Boston as we continue with this fine tradition of supporting folks running the Boston Marathon (or any spring marathon) here in Chicago.  We have the 20 mile route all planned and fully supported.  After the run, please join us for Will's famous chili and Goose Island Beer.  For more information or you would like to sign up, please call Universal Sole or email @ info@universalsole.com.

Beyond the "Six-Pack"

Did you know that lower back and pelvic pain is the most common reason people seek medical attention in the United States?  In fact, treatment of back and pelvic disorders accounts for 1% of the United States gross domestic product!

A recent study in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy compared changes in muscle thickness of two abdominal muscle groups in healthy individuals and those with lumbopelvic pain.  The results revealed that individuals with lumbopelvic pain demonstrated a 20.9% reduction in ability to contract the deep abdominal muscles when compared with healthy individuals. In addition, the muscle thickness is reduced even at rest for individuals with pain.

The transverse abdominis is a deep abdominal muscle that acts as an internal corset to contain the abdominal organs and support the spine.  However, with multiple trunk muscles in the area, activating the transverse abdominis without compensating can be difficult.

You can utilize the breathing pattern to help you connect with your transverse abdominis muscle.  Begin in hands and knees position with a straight spine posture.  Inhale, allowing the abdomen to relax downwards.  As you exhale, draw the abdominal wall up towards the spine without moving the spine or hips.  It's harder than you think!

Now try activating the transverse abdominis during a classic abdominal strengthening exercise, the plank.*

Begin lying on your stomach, propped on your elbows

Depress your shoulder blades and push the elbows into the surface to lift the upper body a few inches

Turn your toes under and plant on the surface

As you exhale, draw in the abdominal muscles to stabilize the spine and lift the body off surface

Keep the chin tucked to neutral, maintain neutral spine and relax the gluteal muscles

Continue to breathe, drawing in the abdominal muscles with each exhale

Having trouble?  Your physical therapist can help you "find" and strengthen these muscles, enhancing the effectiveness of your fitness activities and reducing your risk for chronic lower back and pelvic pain.
